This Is It makes $20m in one day

THE Michael Jackson concert documentary This Is It earned $20.1m at worldwide box offices in its first day, the studio that made the film has said.
The movie, which is based on rehearsal footage for the star’s ill-fated comeback shows, was premiered around the world on Tuesday.

Steve Elzer from Sony Pictures said the movie is a “reaffirmation of the global appeal of Michael Jackson”. The film made $7.4m in the US and $2m in the UK.
“The studio believes that the worldwide launch, with very strong performance across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia, represents an amazing beginning for the film,” Mr Elzer said in a statement. He has also revealed that the studio will submit the movie to the Academy Awards for consideration this year in the best picture category.
To be a contender for Oscar shortlisting, the film must complete a seven-day run in Los Angeles County and film-makers would need to “submit the proper paperwork,” Academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger said. Director Kenny Ortega said the late star “deserves” to win an Oscar.
Jackson’s brothers attended the film’s screening in LA on Tuesday and simultaneous premieres were held in 18 other cities around the world. The movie was then released to cinemas on Wednesday for a two-week run only.
However, Sony has said the movie will be extended beyond its planned stint if ticket demand is high.
The movie, which runs to nearly two hours, features Jackson singing and dancing to his biggest hits, including Beat It, Black or White and Man in the Mirror. – BBC Jackson, who died on 25 June aged 50, had spent the previous four months rehearsing in LA for the record 50 concerts which were to be held in London.
More than 800,000 tickets had been sold for the concerts, with organisers promising one of the “most expensive and technically advanced” live shows ever. He was just two weeks away from the opening night at the time of his death. By the weekend, it will be shown in 110 countries. – BBC

Miley Cyrus Approves of Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner

Miley says she doesn't know if the two Taylors are dating, but is happy for them if they really are a couple.

Though having no idea if her best friend Taylor Swift is really dating Taylor Lautner just like what rumors on the street say, Miley Cyrus is wishing them the best should they are a couple. "The Taylors? Oh, I don't know. I'm not into the drama. I have no idea," she told Chicago's B96 morning show during a tour stop earlier this week. "I mean, if he's happy and if she's happy, sounds good to me."

Miley went on revealing, "I've known Taylor [Lautner] since I was really young." She continued, "When he did '[The Adventures of] Sharkboy and Lavagirl,' it was between me and somebody else, and then I ended up doing 'Hannah Montana', so I've known him for, like, a really long time."

Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner have become the subjects of dating speculation ever since they are billed to star as lovers in next year's flick "Valentine's Day". Not bothering to confirm or deny that they are embarking a real-life romance, they keep adding fuel to the mounting dating talks with their close bond. They, moreover, are often photographed together.

Miley Cyrus Describes Her 'Sex and the City 2' Shooting Experience

While the 'Hannah Montana' star talks about how it is making a cameo in the 'Sex and the City' sequel, Bette Midler sets record straight on her cameo speculation.

Miley Cyrus has shot her cameo part for "Sex and the City 2" in mid-November, and she has taken it to KIIS-FM morning radio show to share her shooting experience. On Friday, October 30, the star of "Hannah Montana" told Ryan Seacrest, "It was like the best job I'd ever been on. It was a total dream come true."

The daughter of country crooner Billy Ray Cyrus continued on praising some of the stars of the romantic comedy. "It was so cool. Working with Kim [Cattrall] was a really cool," the 16-year-old actress/singer shared. "And Sarah Jessica Parker was like the nicest person in the world."

Miley also talked about the filming process for her part that lasted less than two hours. "I didn't end up shooting until 11 p.m.," she said. "It was awesome - I got a free trip to New York. I hung out in New York all day and then I got to go to the set. I literally shot for an hour-and-a-half, and it was done."

Miley Cyrus was captured on camera shooting her cameo part at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City on October 16. She was seen in a red carpet scene with Kim Cattrall, wearing matching metallic dresses and knee-length boots. The only difference spotted from the two's outfits is the neck accessory they were donning.

On another news related to the "Sex and the City" sequel, E! Online reported that contrary to words on the street, Bette Midler will not be seen having a cameo in the movie. Setting the story straight was the comedienne herself. "My daughter was a PA on the movie," she explained on why she was spotted on the film's set with SJP. "It was a big thrill for her. She had a great time. She loves the business."

"Sex and the City 2" has all four leading ladies of the original series, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis reprising their role as Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte respectively. Chris Noth also returns as Big, and writer/director/producer Michael Patrick King is back to his post. Principal photography was kicked off in New York in September. This sequel is set for U.S. release on May 28, 2010.

'Supernatural' 5.08 Preview: Sounds Like Trickster's Job

From a sitcom to a soapy hospital drama to a Japanese game show to a crime procedural, the Winchester brothers are thrown from one channel to another.

An episode of "Supernatural" which pays homage to several other shows on television will air on November 5. In "Changing Channels", when Sam and Dean find themselves living their lives on what appear to be TV shows, it makes for a whole new style of reality television and they wonder if the Trickster (guest star Richard Speight, Jr.) is to blame.

The preview gives glimpses of the brothers in shows like "Grey's Anatomy", "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", a Japanese game and a sitcom. Each new experience they encounter is more bizarre than the next and they want out. But is the Trickster really the mastermind behind the madness?

Trickster first appeared on the show in the episode "Tall Tales" of season 2. This character is a member of demigods who can cause chaos with their pranks which are sometimes humorous. He made a return and was last seen in the third season's "Mystery Spot" where he trapped Dean in an infinite time loop which caused him to continually die in increasingly strange ways.

'CSI' 10.06 Preview: Death and the Maiden

A suspect punishing its victims more bizarre than beating and stabbing will be the crime that the team must solve on 'Death and the Maiden'.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" will see the CSIs discovering that two apparently unrelated crimes are actually parts of the same twisted revenge plot. The preview says that the November 5 episode will be "unforgettable" and that there are three confessions and three suspects.

On related news, a new series of game based on the show is now available for Nintendo DS, Wii, Xbox 360 and PC. "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Deadly Intent" will have five cases to solve which plots are all written by the writers of the actual show. Players will find out later that all cases are tangled in one unique storyline.

"CSI" has spawned other game titles before this but "Deadly Intent" would be the first to feature Dr. Raymond Langston, the character who joins the show's tenth season following Gil Grissom's departure. As usual, players can help the other detectives' investigations and gain their respects as well as analyze crime scenes with the uber technology.

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy Confirmed for 'Mad Max 4'

The 'Hancock' beauty and the 'RocknRolla' actor are indeed in negotiations to take on the lead roles in 'Mad Max: Fury Road'.

Rumor on the street suggesting that Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy may be involved in "Mad Max: Fury Road" is on the right path after all. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the Academy Award-winning actress and the gay gangster of "RocknRolla" are in negotiations to star in the fourth installment of the "Mad Max" series.

Hardy, who will be seen as Eames in Christopher Nolan's "Inception", is expected to step into the role of hardened ex-cop Max Rockatansk, meaning he will replace Mel Gibson who had portayed the character in the first three installments. 34-year-old Theron, in the meantime, will take on the female lead role. Details about her character are yet to be disclosed though.

"Mad Max: Fury Road", according to THR, will take place a short while after the story detailed in 1985's "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome". To be an Australian production, this fourth film eyes a start of production in summer 2010 in the Down Under. Earlier report has suggested that Sydney and outback New South Wales are likely to be the shooting locations.

Days prior to the outing of this casting confirmation, director George Miller told Australia's ABC News that he was still in the middle of the casting process and there was yet decision made for the leading actors. At the same time, words came out that "Avatar" star Sam Worthington might be tapped as the lead actor.

'Men in Black 3' Moves Forward With Writer Etan Cohen

The writer of 'Tropic Thunder' has been hired by Sony Pictures to pen the script, while director Barry Sonnenfeld is rumored to be attached.

A progress has been made in the development of "Men in Black 3" with the hiring of a writer. The Hollywood Reporter (THR)'s Risky Biz Blog reported that one of the "Tropic Thunder" screenwriters, Etan Cohen, has been brought on board by Sony Pictures to work on the script to the latest installment of the sci-fi comedy series.
THR claimed that the studio has the intention "to continue the franchise's top-tier status" with the addition of Cohen. The latest writer brought to the "MIB" franchise, Cohen is reported to be "deep into his draft" for the third movie. Ed Solomon wrote the script for the first "MIB", and Robert Gordon and Barry Fanaro for the second one.

The scribe aside, the publication suggested that Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of the first two "MIB" is attached to the new film. Still, it noted that no formal deal or offer has been made just yet. A big question mark is still circling around whether the series stars, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, will make their return in the movie which eyes a start date in spring 2010.

Sony announced its plan to develop a second sequel to 1997 hit alien movie "Men in Black" back on April 1 this year. The revelation was made by Sony Worldwide Distribution president Rory Bruer during Sony Pictures' presentation at 2009 ShoWest convention in Las Vegas.

Etan Cohen has written the script of "Tropic Thunder" along with star Ben Stiller and fellow scribbler Justin Theroux. His feature credits also included "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa". He is currently working on untitled Sherlock Holmes project, a comedic Sherlock Holmes movie starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell.

Exclusive Interview: Shwayze on New Album, Tour and Movie Project

Shwayze says 'Let It Beat' has lots of catchy songs, 'Party RockTour' will be full of sexy girls and he will show his comedic side in 'Get Jack's Tickets'.

Along with Cisco Adler, Shwayze rose to stardom through singles "Buzzin' " as well as "Corona and Lime". Becoming talks of the town since cracking Billboard Hot 100, they are determined to share more music with their fans by following up their debut album "Shwayze" with another record called "Let It Beat" and hitting the road for a tour.

In the spirit of the effort which will hit U.S. market on November 3, Shwayze exclusively told AceShowbiz about what they have to offer in the album. He promised there will be lots of catchy tunes and a duet with Snoop Dogg. The rapper also addressed what to expect from his upcoming "Party RockTour" and movie project "Get Jack's Tickets" as well as rumor of him collaborating with Kanye West.

ASB: When did you first find out about your passion in music?

Shwayze: I've always known...I've always loved music. It has always been a huge part of my life.

ASB: In what kind of circumstance are you mostly active in writing music?

Shwayze: I typically write when I'm in the concert environment...in the studio, on the road, on the bus or whenever I'm bored.

ASB: How is "Let It Beat" different from the debut album?

Shwayze: The first record was the first time Cisco and I ever did anything together so it was an experiment. It was then Cisco taught me about song structure and about the art of recording. When we got a chance to make the second record our focus was different and we wanted to take it to the next level in all aspects...production wise and lyrically.

ASB: You experienced a chart success early in your career. Do you feel the pressure when crafting the sophomore set?

Shwayze: Naw, I think excitement and nervousness are similar emotions. We'd been traveling for 8 months straight playing music we created 2 years before. When we finally got a break we wanted nothing more than to make new music! For our fans, but mostly for ourselves. For us it's about the music, so we handle that and worry about the critics later.

ASB: What would be the second single after "Get U Home"? And why?

Shwayze: That's hard! There are a few candidates.. I mean it could be 'Maneatrr', 'Livin' It Up', 'Down at the Motel', 'Crazy 4 U'. Cisco is a hook master so they're all catchy as hell!

ASB: How did it feel to score music for "Sorority Row" and film a music video with those beautiful ladies?

Shwayze: It was classic.. The whole thing from shooting the video with the cast to seeing it in the film, which I actually liked!

ASB: Could you please confirm at least one guest artist who will appear in your album?

Shwayze: We got uncle Snoop [Dogg] on the record. He appears on a song called 'Livin' It Up'. A song for the haters.

ASB: We see that you make a duet with Kanye West on the remix of song "Rock N Roll". Tell us how you guys first met and decided to collaborate.

Shwayze: That's a rumor! When I heard I called my manager like 'We got Kanye!?' Haha we'll collab in the future for sure.

ASB: What kind of fiesta fans can expect from the upcoming "Party RockTour"?

Shwayze: Pinatas y caliente mamacitas. [pinatas and sexy girls]

ASB: So, there's this feature movie project "Get Jack's Tickets". What is your role in that?

Shwayze: I don't want to give it away.. Just know that it's hilarious and hopefully the first of many.

ASB: Please leave a message for AceShowbiz's readers and tell them why they should buy your album!

Shwayze: If you buy our record the person you love will call you tonight! Send this to 10 people or 7yrs [of] bad sex...

Look forward to Shwayze being AceShowbiz.com's Artist of the Week on Monday, November 2.

'True Blood' Spoilers: June Premiere, Naked Eric and More

Find out who will be back for the third season even though he's dead, what Sookie and Bill are up to and what the theme of the third season is.

It has just been confirmed at the Paley Center for Media that "True Blood" will be back for the third season in June 2010, the same time frame when season 2 debuted. During the panel held in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, creator Alan Ball and other writers such as Raelle Tucker and Alexander Woo came out with a lot of spoilers for the new season.

First thing first, Ball answered the question about season 2's cliffhanger where Bill was abducted by an unknown person. Ball spilled that fans need not wait long because it will be revealed immediately in the first episode. Another juicy spoiler would be shirtless Eric. "Alexander Skarsgard appears without most of his clothes in the very first episode of season 3," Ball revealed.

On which characters will strut back, Ball said, "There are a big boatload of new characters in season. Even the Newlins may appear again." He also confirmed that Evan Rachel Wood will return as Queen of Louisiana, something which the audience at the panel were not too excited about. Pam and Nan Flagan will also show up. Interestingly, one dead character which will be resurrected in the form of flashback would be Godric.

Regarding the fate of Sookie, Ball said, "There will be more conjecture about what she is and she will be more driven to discover what she is." In fact the theme for the third season would be "Identity". Her relationship with Bill may not be a smooth ride in season 3 but they "have a connection that will not die."

The third season is based on Charlaine Harris' third book "Club Dead". Ball said that he has a responsibility to stay true to the book but then there would be no surprises.

The creator of "Desperate Housewives", Marc Cherry, has agreed with ABC to a deal that will keep him as the executive producer and show runner of the dramedy for two more years. He was previously committed until 2011.

The show is currently airing its sixth season. With the new deal, it may extend up to season 9. However, it is not set in stone yet that "Desperate" will run until 2013 because the principal cast members of the show have not struck a deal.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Cherry would develop a new series for ABC together with "Desperate" producer Alexandra Cunningham. As a measure, ABC has anticipated Cherry's less presence on "Desperate" by signing Bob Daily to run the day to day operation should the new project take off.

The other project that Cherry has been working on for the network would be a multi-camera comedy about two very different brothers. One is gay and the other is straight but they share a gynecological practice, Variety reported.

On why Cherry's works are featured prominently on ABC, Entertainment Group topper Steve McPherson said that Cherry is a "special part" of the network. "For me it's been an amazing collaboration. It's wonderful to know that he'll be around. The new stuff that he's already working on is a huge priority for us," he said.

On another news, "Desperate Housewives" will welcome the voice of Homer Simpson of "The Simpsons" to a future episode. Dan Castellaneta will play the pilot of a small plane that crashes down on Wisteria Lane during a Christmas party. Some characters will die because of the accident.

Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Off to a Solid Start

This music-filled documentary kicks off its run to the top of the box office with more than 2 million dollars from its first late-night screenings in North America alone.

Michael Jackson's "This Is It" is well on its way to the crowned #1 spot at the box office. The Associated Press reported the movie that compiled the late King of Pop's rehearsal footage has collected an estimated $2.2 million from its first late-night screenings on Tuesday, October 27 in the U.S. and Canada alone.

While the documentary hasn't approached any major box-office records so far, Sony Pictures has claimed that the opening night numbers were "unprecedented" for a Tuesday in October. Considering that "This Is It" opened on a weeknight outside of the summer, the Kenny Ortega-directed movie did pull a strong number.

Still, it came nowhere close to the $13.2 million "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End" collected on its Thursday night advance evening screenings in 2006. It also came short to obtain the best Tuesday night advance results, which still goes to 1996's "Independence Day" with its $11.1 million.

The movie expanded to a wide release on Wednesday, October 28, and the studio has reported that the early Wednesday matinee numbers have already surpassed the film's haul from the Tuesday night figures. Executives experienced in tracking box office suggested that this music-filled documentary is likely to sell $10 million to $12 million worth of tickets domestically on Wednesday.

These initial numbers pointed out on the likelihood of "This Is It" becoming a top-grossing music documentary. "As a genre, concert movies and even documentaries aren't usually the type of films to bring in big box-office bucks, but because of his name and also the timing of it, I think it's a winner," said Hollywood.com's box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "That $60 million investment I think was worthwhile."

But, the real test for the movie will come Friday, October 30. The Halloween weekend will place it to be in competition against scary movies such as "Paranormal Activity" and "Saw VI". The theater business usually faced cuts in ticket sales as many moviegoers opt to skip movies in favor of parties.

"This Is It" offers a behind-the-scenes footage of Michael preparing for a series of the O2 London shows he was rehearsing before he passed away on June 25. It compiles more than 100 hours of video footage concert promoter AEG Live shot during April, May and June 2009, and has just been released in theaters worldwide for a limited two-week engagement.

"My role has really changed," the 43-year-old mother says of sons Kevin, Joe Jonas, and Nick Jonas already obtaining their driver's licenses and diplomas. However, "I'm always their mom" she goes on emphasizing her role in the family now that Kevin is about to leave the home they share to live with his future bride Danielle. Michael Jackson's This Is It Review: He's Still a Thriller

By Richard Corliss
Square at the U.K. premiere of Michael Jackson's This Is It on Oct. 27, 2009

Death and resurrection. That's the scenario not just for gods but for pop stars who earn fans' ardor with an electrifying presence and their sympathy with very public private lives of addiction and misbehavior. The stars' talent makes them unique; their transgressions make them human. Michael Jackson, who died in June at 50, outlived Edith Piaf and Judy Garland by three years, and Elvis by eight. (Forget Madonna — that woman is too smart to self-immolate.) Jackson's bizarre resculpting of his features, his litigious shenanigans with his youngest admirers, his obsession with being an eternal preadolescent, a petrified Peter Pan: all these eccentricities gave him an otherworldly cast. It took death to restore his standing as one-of-a-kind entertainer — to bring him back to life.

Jackson is hot again. His old albums — now sacred relics, for which the faithful did not pay so much as tithe — sold better after his death this summer than they had in this millennium. A poll of visitors to the Fandango web site showed that the No. 1 movie costume for this weekend's Halloween revelers would be Michael Jackson. The singer, whose worldwide success was built on CDs and concerts, not movies, has become his own fictional character. And like the runners-up — Wolverine from the X-Men films and the Twilight series' Edward — Jackson is a hero from the dark side.

But full redemption, not to mention true resurrection, requires a personal appearance. And on the 125th day he rose from the dead, at least on screen, with Michael Jackson's This Is It, a docu-musical record of the star's rehearsals for his comeback London concert series that was to begin in July. Sony, the music and movie conglomerate that has a decades-long stake in Jackson's economic fortunes, shrouded the project in mystery until its premiere, held simultaneously last night and today in 16 cities around the globe. (Sony took over all 13 auditoriums of the Regal E-Walk Theater on New York City's 42nd Street to show the movie to 3,200 invitees.) Many of the venues had a satellite feed from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, where director Kenny Ortega, who had also been in charge of the planned concert, greeted surviving Jackson brothers Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Jackie.

The only pre-premiere insights to the film came from two people who had been close to Jackson. His father Joe told the British tabloid the News of the World: "This movie features body doubles, no doubt about it." (Given his wrangles with his family and with AEG, the concert's promoters, he may not be an unimpeachable source.) Michael's stalwart buddy Elizabeth Taylor, who attended an early screening last week, effusively Tweeted that This Is It was "the single most brilliant piece of filmmaking I have ever seen." And she was in The Sandpiper.

So what is This Is It? A concert film without the concert. A backstage musical that takes place almost entirely onstage. A no-warts hagiography that still gets the audience closer to the real Michael Jackson — MJ the performer, that is — than anything in the man's avidly documented history. Wisely and decently ignoring the circumstances of his death and the circus that followed it, Ortega focuses on the re-creation of about a dozen Jackson standards for the concert. ("Beat It," "Billie Jean," "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," "Black and White" and "I'll Be There" are all here.) At times several takes of a song are edited into one performance; you know because Jackson is sporting different rehearsal clothes. The footage was shot so the star could study his work and that of his crew, thus it has the artlessness of visual stenography. The art is in what we're privileged to watch: a perfectionist who quietly pushes himself to prove he's still got it.

The movie is worlds removed from another making-of concert doc, Madonna's calculatedly scandalous Truth or Dare, and closer to old let's-put-on-a-show musicals like the Busby Berkeley 42nd Street, the Garland-Mickey Rooney Babes in Arms and the Broadway standard A Chorus Line. It has all the elements: the big star (Jackson), the guiding impresario (Ortega) and, supporting them, the whole retinue of gifted, ambitious singers and dancers. The movie opens with the prospective dancers' declarations of the inspiration impact Jackson has had on them. (Okay, they really need this job, but the effusions sound genuine.) Later, the men have to rehearse one of Jackson's more notorious dance figures. Apparently, grabbing your crotch while gliding across the stage is more difficult than it looks.

There are only two differences between This and the old musicals. Instead of the star breaking a leg, he dies after we see the fruit of his labors. And in This Is It the emphasis is not on love affairs — though Jackson proclaims a tender "I love you" to everyone in sight — but on the energizing, exhausting business of making a spectacle spectacular.

Ortega and Jackson had some Berkeley-size production numbers in mind. A version of "Smooth Criminal" interpolates Michael into antique movie clips with Rita Hayworth, Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson. "They Don't Care About Us" sends 1,100 CGI soldiers marching down a kind of Champs Elysees whose Arc de Triomphe is bent into an M for Michael. "Thriller" was to boast 3-D effects. And "Earth Song," the rainforest message number, has a dewy child (a girl, if you're wondering) facing down a bulldozer, which was then to motor toward the front of the stage, ready to devour the star. 'Save Michael, he seemed to be saying, and save the planet.

But the coolest moments show Jackson unadorned and unplugged. He sings "Human Nature" nearly a capella, blending vocal virtuosity and a choirboy's clarity; there's nothing false about his falsetto. His terpsichore leads viewers through how-the-hell-does-he-do-that? astonishment into a mute appreciation of Jackson's ability to channel Fred Astaire's nonchalant elegance and fit it to the percussive drive of R&B. He gives dancing class and sex.

Jackson also plays well with others. There's a splendid duet with Judith Hill on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" that's both a call-response act of communion and a little contest over who can show more soul. He urges his lead guitarist, the petite blond Orianthi Panagaris, to release all the wildness her fingers can express. He's determined to get the best from everyone, and to think the best of them. Near the end, just before a powerful rendition of "Man in the Mirror," he thanks members of his family: "Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, Tito, Randy..." Then, remembering his mother, he adds, "I should also say Katherine. I love you." He's got a lot of love he needs to express.

No question that Jackson, deeply in debt to Sony and other creditors, also needed the money the concerts would generate. But his heroic effort and attention to detail suggest that this was no take-the-money-and-run greatest-hits scam. He saw This Is It as a career retrospective that would reestablish the value of his music and prove he still had the strength and the moves of 20, 30, 40 years ago. At times he tries to husband his resources: stinting on the vocalizing of one song, he apologizes: "I'm just trying to save my voice." Then the beat or the melody gets to him, and he helplessly transforms into the full-throttle kid.

For a modern entertainer who dies before his time, immortality is measured in residuals — the money from commemorative projects like this. Michael Jackson will have no resurrection — in the end, that was that — but the movie does earn him a redemptive legacy. It proves that, at the end, he was still a thriller. Fans and doubters alike can look at the gentle, driven singer-dancer at the center of this up-close document and say, admiringly: This was him.
