As of late, Abrams has confirmed that the "Star Trek" sequel will not come as soon as it was expected. Though Paramount Pictures once declared they plan to release it in 2011, the helmer believed the second film will not hit theaters until 2012. Agreeing to Abrams, producer/writer Damon Lindelof said, "Yeah, I think that we would be hard pressed to get it on screens by 2011."
Though "Star Trek" sequel will not happen soon, Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof have been tapped by the studio to pen the script. Abrams previously sparked rumor that this new film could be made in 3-D, but he is still not sure whether or not he will return as director of the forthcoming movie project.
